This is a good way to see how colors translate to black and white. By doing this you can have a better understanding of values. If you have a access to photoshop you can do this by using the desaturate image enhancement. If you dont have photoshop you can download a program called GIMP which is free and will be good enough for this. Try this out and you will get a better understanding of values. I hope this wasn't confusing, if you have any other questions just leave another comment.

Re: Suggestive Realism » OnlyPencil Drawing Tutorials

are there any shading techniques or practicing that you recommend? im having a hard time not only recognizing the values but actually putting them on paper. not very good atcreating contrast either. you have any tips?

Re: Suggestive Realism » OnlyPencil Drawing Tutorials

Your blog is interesting!

Keep up the good work!

Re: Suggestive Realism » OnlyPencil Drawing Tutorials

very intereting and insightful!

Re: Suggestive Realism » OnlyPencil Drawing Tutorials

I notice you like Plato's Republic. A suggestion then to help bring the people in Plato to life. Read The People of Plato by Professor Debra Nails. Some other books suggestions regarding Plato:

Therapeia: Plato's Conception of Philosophy by Dr. Robert Earl Cushman

Plato General Theory of Fine Art by Dr. Constantine Cavarnos

I guarantee that if you understand the books above, you experience of Plato will be enriched for life.

I recently found your site. I have become a fan of your work. You are an excellent artist. I also like the fact that you teach-indeed, teach the world in a humble, professional manner-online. Superb job! Perhaps one day you can do drawings of the people in Plato's dialogues based upon photographs of the people around you who may most closely represent the way the people in Plato's dialogues may have looked. I think it could be a book.
